frequently asked questionsHow do I retrieve my samples? Each sample will be given a unique identifier (i.e. barcode) which will facilitate its handling. Access to samples and information is done via the Internet, where you can order the retrieval of your sample. Orders taken before 12.30pm will be shipped for next business day delivery (Monday to Thursday) What about samples that need to be transported in liquid nitrogen? Specimens that require the ultra-low temperatures of liquid nitrogen can be transported in IATA-approved Cryo-shippers. Please contact us for further information. How do I prevent someone else from accessing my sample information? You will be able to define the security level of access you require from username/password through to biometric identification (fingerprint or iris scan). How do I prevent someone else from physically accessing my samples? Your samples can only be accessed by your username/password or (if installed) biometric identification. Only you can authorize the movement or disposal of your samples. Additionally, the facility will be secured with strictly controlled smart card access entry, security cameras and back-to-base intrusion alarms. The storage units will be individually secured and monitored 24hrs a day and alarms directed to a 24 x 7 manned alert facility. What temperature should I store my samples at? Lower storage temperatures are associated with extended viability of the preserved samples. While many samples can be stored at -80°C, it should be noted that at this temperature metabolic activity has not ceased, it has only slowed down (due to small amounts of unfrozen water). By reducing sample temperatures to the glass transition phase of -132°C, all metabolic activity comes to a halt. Storage below -132°C in liquid nitrogen therefore offers the most secure form of preservation For a more complete discussion go to the how cold? page. How are your freezers backed up? CO2 backup is available for each individual freezer, together with remote alarms, which connect to our central security system. A diesel generator provides backup in the unlikely event of a power outage. What sort of samples will you store? Cell lines, DNA, RNA, plasma, platelets, cord blood, sperm, ova, embryos, tissue samples, urine, bacteria, fungi, and viruses are just some examples of the samples that can be stored. Do you only store vials? No. Biological samples clearly come in many different shapes and sizes. Please contact us with your sample details to arrange storage. Who barcodes my sample? You freeze your samples in pre bar-coded vials. We can provide you with bar code labels if required. What are the cryobyte System Requirements? All Cryobyte users will need access to a PC or Mac.
